Day 10 - Derry

We had a guided walking tour along the city walls of Derry.  On the river side there were originally only about 5% catholic citizens, but that ratio for both sides of the river is now about 50:50 because the Catholics are reproducing much faster.

Today we experienced some "soft rain" - the first we have had since leaving home.

The Backroads tour bus is excellent - definitely 5 star.  Maximum passengers 12, and the driver takes us along small and narrow country roads and through interesting villages.  The accommodation is excellent

This statue demonstrates the desire of the people to reconcile, but the fingers are not touching yet.

The "Peace Bridge" across the river Foyle in Derry.  The building behind was heavily bombed, but has been reconstructed.

This 14 year girl was shot on "Bloody Sunday" when she was caught in the crossfire between the IRA and the British army.  This is where the first clash with the IRA occurred.

In Derry, the iron rooves of houses in Artillery Street were removed to make bullets for use during the fighting.

An Iron Age fort with stunning views over the nearby lochs.

Winding narrow road on the way to the north coast.

Typical small church in the middle of nowhere, on the road to the north coast.

The northern most coast of Ireland, which is a little over 55 degrees north.  On a clear day it is possible to see Scotland from here.

A field of the ever-popular Irish potatoes flourishing during their growth phase.
