Day 2 - Cork City

The trip to Cork was very wearying.  Left home at 6.55 pm for a flight which did not depart until 2.15 am the next morning.  Melb - Dubai, Dubau-London with Qantas, London-Cork with Aer Lingus.  We checked our cases through from Melbourne to Cork, and miraculously they arrived!! It was so exhilarating to see Karen and Steve waiting at the airport for us.

They are sharing their home with us, and making us feel very welcome.  Today Karen drove us around to give us a feel for Cork.  This is a very attractive city, with a river (Lee) split into two rivers as it passes through.  Ships, fishing boats, and pleasure craft abound.  Property prices vary enormously in different areas of the city.  Much of the housing is semi-detached with narrow frontages, and the streets narrow although two-way.

We visited the Main Street, a major cathedral (which wanted to charge an entry fee), the English Market (with an amazing array of interesting fresh foods), the City Gaol which closed in 1923.  The gaol has a very good audio tour and excellent wax models of prisoners and wardens.

Cork is surprisingly hilly and very pretty.  Ineristingly the street signs and other identifying signs are shown in both Gaelic and English.  Children learn Gaelic at school for many years.

Went to a seafood restaurant by the river for dinner where we ate a superb dinner with a pint of Guinness.

Ps. We left the Vegemite at home!!

This is Patrick Street today.  Many changes but still some buildings as shown in the first photo.
